The National Engineering Research Center for Antibody Drugs was established based on the major strategic demands of building an innovative country and optimizing the structure of the biomedical industry, with the primary goals of enhancing China's independent innovation capability in antibody technology, strengthening the core competitiveness of China's biomedical industry, and breaking the US monopoly on international antibody technology and the antibody drug industry. The Antibody Center is currently the only ***antibody drug engineering research institution in China.
The Antibody Center was approved for establishment by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2008. The legal entity relying on the Antibody Center – Shanghai National Engineering Research Center for Antibody Drugs Co., Ltd. – is registered in Shanghai Zhangjiang High-Tech Park with a registered capital of 260 million yuan. Its main business scope includes the research and development of antibody drugs, screening of novel antibodies, development of antibody engineering technology, pilot-scale production and process development of antibody drugs, development of antibody detection technology and platform construction, as well as "four technologies" services in related technical fields, making it the largest institution in China specialized in pilot-scale research and industrial development of new antibody drugs.
The main goals and tasks of the Antibody Center revolve around the demand for antibody technology in major diseases such as malignant tumors, infectious diseases, and immune system disorders. These include research, engineering, and industrialization of major key common technologies such as large-scale continuous perfusion and fed-batch culture of antibody new drug cells, large-scale efficient antibody protein purification, and antibody macromolecule drug formulation; conducting a series of development, design, and system integration for efficient and low-cost industrial purification processes; establishing high-level humanization and fully human antibody screening technologies and evaluation systems; forming antibody drug research and development and industrialization capabilities with independent intellectual property rights based on absorbing and incorporating advanced foreign technologies; strengthening international cooperation and exchanges, and providing technical support and services to relevant enterprises.
