  Henan University is a national 'Double First-Class' construction university and a university co-built by the province and ministry. Founded in 1912, it was initially named Henan Preparatory School for Studying in Europe and America, established at the former site of Henan Gongyuan, where the Chinese imperial examination system concluded. The last two national imperial examinations in 1903 and 1904 were held here, marking the end of a millennium-long imperial examination system. In 1912, a group of Henan philanthropists and pioneers, led by Lin Boxiang, founded the Henan Preparatory School for Studying in Europe and America amidst the influence of Western culture and the dawn of the Xinhai Revolution's victory, becoming one of China's three major study-abroad training bases at that time. It later went through stages such as Zhongzhou University, National Fifth Zhongshan University, and Provincial Henan University, before being renamed National Henan University in 1942. It became a comprehensive university with six colleges including arts, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and law, and was one of the national universities with strong academic prowess and renowned reputation both domestically and internationally at that time. After the founding of New China, following the adjustment of colleges and departments, Henan University's College of Agriculture, College of Medicine, and College of Administration were independently established as Henan Agricultural College, Henan Medical College, and Henan Administrative College, respectively. Departments of water conservancy and finance were also transferred to Wuhan University, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, and other universities. The main campus was renamed Henan Normal College. Later, it went through stages such as Kaifeng Normal College and Henan Normal University, before restoring its name as Henan University in 1984. In October 2008, the Henan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education signed a co-construction agreement, and Henan University officially entered the ranks of province-ministry co-built universities. In September 2016, the university was selected into the national '111 Plan'. In September 2017, it was selected as a national 'Double First-Class' construction university.

  For over a century since its establishment, Henan University has adhered to the motto of 'Illustrious Virtue, Renewing the People, and Resting in the Highest Good'. Through the meticulous creation of generations of scholars, it has gradually formed an excellent campus spirit of 'Unity, Diligence, Rigor, and Simplicity', and the 'Heda Spirit' characterized by forward-looking openness, facing the world, upholding truth, pursuing progress, indomitable perseverance, self-reliance, inclusiveness, embracing all rivers, eschewing ostentation, and being rigorous and simple. Under the tutelage of famous scholars and academicians such as Fan Wenlan, Feng Youlan, Dong Zuobin, Feng Jinglan, Luo Zhanglong, Guo Shaoyu, Luo Tingguang, Xiao Yishan, Fan Yingchuan, Mao Lirui, Jiang Liangfu, Ji Wenfu, Ren Fangqiu, and Dang Hongxin, Henan University has cultivated nearly 600,000 talents of various types. Among Henan University alumni, there are 57 academicians and学部委员 (members of academic divisions), and nearly 150 leading cadres at or above the provincial and ministerial level. Many alumni, such as Hou Jingru, Yuan Baohua, Wang Guoquan, Zhao Yimin, Yin Da, Deng Tuo, Bai Shouyi, Yang Tingbao, Gao Jiyu, Yao Xueyin, Zhou Erfu, Wu Qiang, Ma Ke, Zhao Jiuzhang, and Liang Guanglie, have become well-known social figures at home and abroad.

  Currently, Henan University mainly has three campuses: Minglun Campus, Jinming Campus in Kaifeng, and Longzihu Campus in Zhengzhou, covering a total area of over 5,500 mu. Among them, the modern architectural complex of Minglun Campus is a national key cultural relics protection unit.

  Henan University is a comprehensive university with 12 disciplinary categories including literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, education, and art. The university currently has 37 colleges (teaching and research departments), 98 undergraduate majors, 43 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, 20 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, and 19 postdoctoral research stations. Biology is selected as a national first-class construction discipline, and four disciplines (Chemistry, Materials Science, Clinical Medicine, and Engineering) are in the top 1% of ESI world rankings. The university has over 4,400 faculty and staff, including 5 full-time academicians, 13 part-time academicians, and 42 leading talents such as Yangtze River Scholars, National Outstanding Young Scientists, and 'Ten Thousand Talents Program' recipients. The full-time student population is nearly 50,000, including nearly 10,000 postgraduates and over 700 international students. The university has 6 national key scientific research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of Cotton Biology, the State Key Laboratory of Crop Stress Adaptation and Improvement (co-built by province and ministry), the National Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Nano-hybrid Materials Application Technology, the National Local Joint Engineering Research Center for High-Efficiency Display and Lighting Technology, the National Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Antibody Drug Development Technology, and the National Professional Center for Edible Fungi Processing Technology R&D. It also has 2 national key social science research platforms, including the Yellow River Civilization Coordinated Development Center (co-built by province and ministry) and the Yellow River Civilization and Sustainable Development Research Center, and 4 key scientific research platforms of the Ministry of Education, such as the Key Laboratory of Special Functional Materials of the Ministry of Education. It has also established national education, research, and training bases such as the National Ministry of Education's Teacher Training Base for Sports and Arts, the General Administration of Sport of China's Social Science Research Base, the National College Student Cultural Quality Education Base, and the National Excellent Chinese Culture and Art Inheritance Base. Henan University Press, 'Historical Monthly', and 'Journal of Henan University' are influential academic journals in academia. The library houses 5.2 million paper books and over 7 million electronic books. The university has established friendly cooperative relationships with over 120 universities in more than 40 countries and regions and is a member of the International Association of Universities and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities.

  In recent years, leaders such as Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Jiang Zemin, Jia Qinglin, Li Lanqing, Wu Guanzheng, and Li Changchun have visited the university and expressed high hopes for the development of Henan University. In July 2004, during his inspection, Comrade Jiang Zemin personally wrote an inscription: 'Advance with the times, explore and innovate, and build Henan University into a first-class university in China.' In September 2012, Comrade Wen Jiabao, then a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, inscribed for the 100th anniversary of Henan University: 'Run Henan University well and revitalize Central Plains education.' The Henan Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government have always attached great importance to the construction of Henan University and have consistently provided key support to Henan University as a key university for provincial construction.

  Since entering the ranks of national 'Double First-Class' construction universities, the university has adhered to the development positioning of 'Chinese characteristics, world-class, and Central Plains style'. Following the development strategy of 'one main line, three fundamentals, six first-classes, and six projects' proposed by the university's Eleventh Party Congress, it insists on intrinsic development and continuous reform and innovation, striving to enter the ranks of comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationally influential world-class universities by the middle of this century.
